BIM Architectural Facade Alignment (Civil & Construction Engineering)

Formulas & Definitions

A structural engineer designs an exterior curtain-wall facade system for a 20-story commercial tower in downtown Las Vegas using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software. Prefabricated glass and aluminum composite facade panels must be installed on the building frame at an inclined angle to deflect high solar heat gain.

Structural engineering specifications dictate that each facade panel plane must be strictly orthogonal to a structural strut anchor vector pointing along n⃗=⟨3,4,12⟩=3i^+4j^+12k^\vec{n} = \langle 3, 4, 12 \rangle = 3\hat{i} + 4\hat{j} + 12\hat{k}n=⟨3,4,12⟩=3i^+4j^+12k^. Furthermore, the panel plane must intersect a primary structural column node located at spatial grid coordinate P0(10,5,2)P_0(10, 5, 2)P0(10,5,2) feet.

  1. State the scalar equation of a plane in point-normal form, referencing Equations of Planes in 3D.
  2. Determine the standard Cartesian linear equation (ax+by+cz=dax + by + cz = dax+by+cz=d) of the architectural facade plane.
  3. Compute the unit normal vector n^=n⃗∥n⃗∥\hat{n} = \frac{\vec{n}}{\|\vec{n}\|}n^=∥n∥n that BIM software uses to render directional sun-glare reflection vectors.
  4. If a second facade section has the equation 6x+8y+24z=756x + 8y + 24z = 756x+8y+24z=75, determine whether the two facade panels are parallel, perpendicular, or intersecting at an oblique angle.
