Laser Telemetry Diffraction Small-Angle Approximation (Entertainment & Computer Engineering)

Formulas & Definitions

In automated live entertainment stage rigging and motion capture tracking, a laser scanner tracks performers across the stage using high-speed optical galvo mirrors.

When the scanning laser passes through an optical diffraction aperture, the measured light intensity I(θ)I(\theta)I(θ) (in Watts/m2\text{m}^2m2) detected by the photodiode sensor array as a function of the deflection angle θ\thetaθ (in radians) is given by:

I(θ)=sin⁡(4θ)2θfor θ≠0I(\theta) = \frac{\sin(4\theta)}{2\theta} \quad \text{for } \theta \neq 0I(θ)=2θsin(4θ)for θ=0

  1. Attempt direct substitution of θ=0\theta = 0θ=0 into I(θ)I(\theta)I(θ) and explain why this creates an indeterminate form for the optical sensor micro-controller.
  2. Apply the special trigonometric limit identity lim⁡u→0sin⁡(u)u=1\lim_{u \to 0} \frac{\sin(u)}{u} = 1limu→0usin(u)=1 to calculate the exact peak centerline intensity lim⁡θ→0I(θ)\lim_{\theta \to 0} I(\theta)limθ→0I(θ).
  3. State the calibrated intensity value the embedded software should assign to the central on-axis point θ=0\theta = 0θ=0 to prevent computational division-by-zero crashes.
