Prerequisite Desert and Bait-and-Switch

Problem Statement

Engineering curricula trap students in a bait-and-switch pipeline. Freshmen are hooked by a flashy, hands-on intro seminar where they build robots or towers, only to be immediately dumped into 3 to 4 semesters of abstract calculus, chemistry, and physics taught completely out of context. We lose brilliant, creative problem-solvers in this theoretical desert long before they ever reach an actual engineering department.

Measurable Goals

Provide immediate line-of-sight between abstract math concepts and real engineering applications, ensuring students see why mathematical models matter before losing interest in prerequisite courses.

  • 1-Page Technical Memos: Short writing assignments connect abstract mathematical derivations directly to physical engineering systems, safety requirements, and design trade-offs.
  • Engineering Application Demos & Integrated Worksheets: Course website resources and in-class problem sets feature direct demonstrations showing how assigned math topics govern real-world structural, fluid, or thermodynamic engineering decisions.
