Semiconductor Transistor Current Fluctuation (Electrical Engineering)

Formulas & Definitions

In integrated circuit design, an advanced field-effect transistor (FET) regulates output current based on gate-to-source voltage (VgV_gVg) and drain-to-source voltage (VdV_dVd). In the saturation regime, the electrical drain current III (in milliamperes, mA\text{mA}mA) is modeled by the non-linear constitutive equation:

I(Vg,Vd)=Vg3+Vd2I(V_g, V_d) = \sqrt{V_g^3 + V_d^2}I(Vg,Vd)=Vg3+Vd2

The transistor's nominal operating bias point (Q-point) is established at Vg=2.0 VV_g = 2.0\text{ V}Vg=2.0 V and Vd=4.0 VV_d = 4.0\text{ V}Vd=4.0 V, providing a baseline current of:

I(2,4)=23+42=8+16=24≈4.8990 mAI(2, 4) = \sqrt{2^3 + 4^2} = \sqrt{8 + 16} = \sqrt{24} \approx 4.8990\text{ mA}I(2,4)=23+42=8+16=24≈4.8990 mA

During high-frequency switching, power rail switching noise causes the terminal voltages to shift slightly to an off-nominal state of Vg=2.02 VV_g = 2.02\text{ V}Vg=2.02 V and Vd=3.95 VV_d = 3.95\text{ V}Vd=3.95 V.

  1. State the multivariable total differential formula dIdIdI for the transistor current in terms of voltage differentials dVgdV_gdVg and dVddV_ddVd.
  2. Compute the analytical partial derivatives ∂I∂Vg\frac{\partial I}{\partial V_g}∂Vg∂I and ∂I∂Vd\frac{\partial I}{\partial V_d}∂Vd∂I, and evaluate them at the nominal bias point (2,4)(2, 4)(2,4).
  3. Use the linear approximation L(Vg,Vd)L(V_g, V_d)L(Vg,Vd) centered at (2,4)(2, 4)(2,4) to estimate the perturbed current I(2.02,3.95) mAI(2.02, 3.95)\text{ mA}I(2.02,3.95) mA.
  4. If manufacturer power rail tolerances guarantee ∣dVg∣≤0.05 V|dV_g| \le 0.05\text{ V}∣dVg∣≤0.05 V and ∣dVd∣≤0.10 V|dV_d| \le 0.10\text{ V}∣dVd∣≤0.10 V, compute the maximum worst-case current fluctuation ∣dI∣max⁡|dI|_{\max}∣dI∣max.
