Signal Cutoff Gain (Electrical & Computer Engineering) Solution

Formulas & Definitions

Part 1: Why direct evaluation fails

Direct substitution of the target frequency f=4 kHzf = 4\text{ kHz}f=4 kHz into the gain equation yields:

G(4)=42−164−4=16−160=00G(4) = \frac{4^2 - 16}{4 - 4} = \frac{16 - 16}{0} = \frac{0}{0}G(4)=4−442−16=016−16=00
In mathematics, division by zero is undefined, and 00\frac{0}{0}00 represents an indeterminate form. Physically, this means the filter model cannot compute the voltage gain at that exact transition frequency without using limits.

Part 2: Numerical evaluation near the cutoff frequency

We simplify the gain equation for all frequencies f≠4 kHzf \neq 4\text{ kHz}f=4 kHz by factoring the numerator:

G(f)=(f−4)(f+4)f−4=f+4(for f≠4)G(f) = \frac{(f - 4)(f + 4)}{f - 4} = f + 4 \quad (\text{for } f \neq 4)G(f)=f−4(f−4)(f+4)=f+4(for f=4)

We evaluate the gain at frequencies arbitrarily close to 4 kHz4\text{ kHz}4 kHz from both below and above:

  • Approaching from the left (f→4−f \to 4^-f→4−):
    • G(3.9)=3.9+4=7.9G(3.9) = 3.9 + 4 = 7.9G(3.9)=3.9+4=7.9
    • G(3.99)=3.99+4=7.99G(3.99) = 3.99 + 4 = 7.99G(3.99)=3.99+4=7.99
    • G(3.999)=3.999+4=7.999G(3.999) = 3.999 + 4 = 7.999G(3.999)=3.999+4=7.999
  • Approaching from the right (f→4+f \to 4^+f→4+):
    • G(4.1)=4.1+4=8.1G(4.1) = 4.1 + 4 = 8.1G(4.1)=4.1+4=8.1
    • G(4.01)=4.01+4=8.01G(4.01) = 4.01 + 4 = 8.01G(4.01)=4.01+4=8.01
    • G(4.001)=4.001+4=8.001G(4.001) = 4.001 + 4 = 8.001G(4.001)=4.001+4=8.001

Summary table of gain values:

Frequency fff (kHz) 3.93.93.9 3.993.993.99 3.9993.9993.999 444 4.0014.0014.001 4.014.014.01 4.14.14.1
Gain G(f)G(f)G(f) 7.97.97.9 7.997.997.99 7.9997.9997.999 ? 8.0018.0018.001 8.018.018.01 8.18.18.1

Conclusion: As the frequency pinches closer to the cutoff f=4 kHzf = 4\text{ kHz}f=4 kHz from both sides, the gain values approach a stable value of exactly 888. Thus, while the gain G(4)G(4)G(4) is undefined, the limit is well-defined:

lim⁡f→4G(f)=8\lim_{f \to 4} G(f) = 8f→4limG(f)=8
