Absolute and Relative Extrema

Formulas & Definitions
Core Definition

Let fff be a function with domain DDD.

  1. Absolute (Global) Maximum: fff has an absolute maximum at ccc if f(c)β‰₯f(x)f(c) \ge f(x)f(c)β‰₯f(x) for all x∈Dx \in Dx∈D. The real number f(c)f(c)f(c) is the absolute maximum value.
  2. Absolute (Global) Minimum: fff has an absolute minimum at ccc if f(c)≀f(x)f(c) \le f(x)f(c)≀f(x) for all x∈Dx \in Dx∈D. The real number f(c)f(c)f(c) is the absolute minimum value.
  3. Relative (Local) Maximum: fff has a relative maximum at ccc if there exists an open interval III containing ccc such that f(c)β‰₯f(x)f(c) \ge f(x)f(c)β‰₯f(x) for all x∈I∩Dx \in I \cap Dx∈I∩D.
  4. Relative (Local) Minimum: fff has a relative minimum at ccc if there exists an open interval III containing ccc such that f(c)≀f(x)f(c) \le f(x)f(c)≀f(x) for all x∈I∩Dx \in I \cap Dx∈I∩D.

Concept Explanation

1. Linguistic and Mathematical Precision: Value vs. Location

When reporting optimization results in engineering and calculus, precision in language is essential:

  • Location (xxx-coordinate): Specifies where the extremum occurs (e.g., "the maximum occurs at location x=4Β metersx = 4\text{ meters}x=4Β meters").
  • Extreme Value (yyy-coordinate): Specifies the actual quantity or height attained by the function (e.g., "the maximum bending moment value is 66Β kNβ‹…m66\text{ kN}\cdot\text{m}66Β kNβ‹…m").
  • Extreme Point (xyxyxy-coordinate pair): Combines location and value as an ordered pair (c,f(c))(c, f(c))(c,f(c)) on the Cartesian coordinate plane.
Example: If f(3) = 15 is the peak of the curve:
- The maximum location is x = 3
- The maximum value is 15
- The maximum point is (3, 15)

2. The Endpoint Rule

The Endpoint Rule

Relative (local) extrema can NEVER occur at endpoints of a domain interval.

  • By definition, a relative extremum requires an open neighborhood (cβˆ’Ξ΄,c+Ξ΄)(c - \delta, c + \delta)(cβˆ’Ξ΄,c+Ξ΄) centered at ccc that lies entirely within the domain of the function, allowing values to be compared on both the left and the right of ccc.
  • At a boundary endpoint (such as x=ax = ax=a or x=bx = bx=b in [a,b][a, b][a,b]), points exist only on one side. Therefore, interval boundaries can qualify as absolute extrema, but they are mathematically disqualified from being relative extrema.

3. Absolute Extrema: Existence and Multiplicity

  • Uniqueness of Values: A function can have at most one absolute maximum value and at most one absolute minimum value over its domain.
  • Multiplicity of Locations: An absolute extreme value can occur at multiple locations. For example, the function f(x)=sin⁑(x)f(x) = \sin(x)f(x)=sin(x) on [0,2Ο€][0, 2\pi][0,2Ο€] attains its absolute maximum value of 111 at location x=Ο€2x = \frac{\pi}{2}x=2π, and its absolute minimum value of βˆ’1-1βˆ’1 at location x=3Ο€2x = \frac{3\pi}{2}x=23π. Over the entire real line (βˆ’βˆž,∞)(-\infty, \infty)(βˆ’βˆž,∞), sin⁑(x)\sin(x)sin(x) achieves its absolute maximum value of 111 at infinitely many locations x=Ο€2+2Ο€kx = \frac{\pi}{2} + 2\pi kx=2π+2Ο€k (k∈Zk \in \mathbb{Z}k∈Z).
  • Non-Existence: Absolute extrema do not necessarily exist. A function can fail to attain an absolute maximum or minimum if the domain is open (approaching a hole/open boundary) or if the function grows without bound (lim⁑xβ†’Β±βˆžf(x)=±∞\lim_{x \to \pm\infty} f(x) = \pm\inftylimxβ†’Β±βˆžβ€‹f(x)=±∞ or vertical asymptotes).

Engineering Applications

  • Aerospace Wing Pitch Aerodynamics: Aircraft wings are profiled to produce a lift coefficient CL(Ξ±)C_L(\alpha)CL(Ξ±) as a function of angle of attack Ξ±\alphaΞ±. The absolute maximum of CL(Ξ±)C_L(\alpha)CL(Ξ±) defines the critical stall point (CL,max⁑C_{L,\max}CL,max). Flight control computers lock the trim elevator limits strictly below this angle to ensure aerodynamic controllability and prevent boundary layer separation stall.
  • Power Electronics Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT): Solar photovoltaic panels exhibit non-linear power-voltage curves P(V)=Vβ‹…I(V)P(V) = V \cdot I(V)P(V)=Vβ‹…I(V). Modern microinverters execute iterative hill-climbing algorithms to drive the terminal voltage directly to the location of the absolute maximum power output, optimizing energy harvesting under shifting cloud cover.
  • Structural Engineering Load Envelopes: In bridge structural design, civil engineers compute the envelope of internal shear stresses V(x)V(x)V(x) under rolling wheel loads. Locating both the absolute maximum (highest compressive shear) and absolute minimum (highest tensile shear) determines the cross-sectional steel web thickness required along the span.

Example Problems

Example 1: Reading Extrema from Graphical Data

Consider the piecewise curve defined on [βˆ’3,6][-3, 6][βˆ’3,6] shown below:

12 - Absolute and Relative Extrema Image 1.png

Determine all relative and absolute extrema (values and locations):

Solution
  1. Relative Maxima:
    • y=3y = 3y=3 at location x=0x = 0x=0. (This is a smooth interior peak where the function is larger than all neighboring points on both sides).
    • Endpoint check: The points x=2x = 2x=2 and x=6x = 6x=6 reach y=5y = 5y=5, but x=6x = 6x=6 is an endpoint (no two-sided neighborhood), and x=2x = 2x=2 has domain points only for xβ‰₯2x \ge 2xβ‰₯2 (the branch to the left terminates with an open circle at (1.25,βˆ’4)(1.25, -4)(1.25,βˆ’4) and is discontinuous). Therefore, there is only one relative maximum.
  2. Absolute Maximum:
    • Value: 555, attained at two locations: x=2x = 2x=2 and x=6x = 6x=6. Both points have solid dots, meaning f(2)=5f(2) = 5f(2)=5 and f(6)=5f(6) = 5f(6)=5 are explicitly reached.
  3. Relative Minima:
    • Value: βˆ’1-1βˆ’1 at location x=βˆ’2x = -2x=βˆ’2.
    • Value: 111 at location x=4x = 4x=4. Both points are smooth interior valleys with valid two-sided open neighborhoods.
  4. Absolute Minimum:
    • Does not exist (DNE).
    • Analysis: The curve drops downward toward y=βˆ’4y = -4y=βˆ’4 as xβ†’1.25βˆ’x \to 1.25^-xβ†’1.25βˆ’ on the left branch, terminating in an open circle at (1.25,βˆ’4)(1.25, -4)(1.25,βˆ’4). Because this lowest point is excluded, the function values get arbitrarily close to βˆ’4-4βˆ’4 but never actually attain βˆ’4-4βˆ’4. Since no lower point exists and βˆ’4-4βˆ’4 is not in the range, the function has no absolute minimum.

Example 2: Parabola on a Closed Interval

Identify the absolute and relative extrema for f(x)=(x+1)2f(x) = (x + 1)^2f(x)=(x+1)2 on the closed interval [βˆ’2,0][-2, 0][βˆ’2,0]:

12 - Relative Extrema Guided Notes Image 2.png
Solution
  1. Differentiate: fβ€²(x)=2(x+1)=0β€…β€ŠβŸΉβ€…β€Šx=βˆ’1f'(x) = 2(x + 1) = 0 \implies x = -1fβ€²(x)=2(x+1)=0⟹x=βˆ’1.
  2. Candidate Values:
    • Left Endpoint: f(βˆ’2)=(βˆ’2+1)2=1f(-2) = (-2 + 1)^2 = 1f(βˆ’2)=(βˆ’2+1)2=1.
    • Interior Critical Point: f(βˆ’1)=(βˆ’1+1)2=0f(-1) = (-1 + 1)^2 = 0f(βˆ’1)=(βˆ’1+1)2=0.
    • Right Endpoint: f(0)=(0+1)2=1f(0) = (0 + 1)^2 = 1f(0)=(0+1)2=1.
  3. Classification:
    • Absolute Minimum: Value 000 at location x=βˆ’1x = -1x=βˆ’1.
    • Relative Minimum: Value 000 at location x=βˆ’1x = -1x=βˆ’1 (interior valley with a full two-sided neighborhood).
    • Absolute Maximum: Value 111 at locations x=βˆ’2x = -2x=βˆ’2 and x=0x = 0x=0.
    • Relative Maxima: None. (The highest peaks occur strictly at the boundaries x=βˆ’2x = -2x=βˆ’2 and x=0x = 0x=0, which are endpoints and are disqualified by the Endpoint Rule).
